We are free to read any text by any reading protocol we wish. Therefore we look for rhetorical figures that exploit, among other things, the phonic aspects of the words making up the text. With science fiction, much of the significance of the story will manifest itself in the alternative workings of the world in which the characters maneuver. Therefore we will pay particular attention to the rhetorical figures by which differences between our world and the world of the story are suggested.
